On November 7, the KOL-K2 tower kitchen in the main building of the University of Zurich was transformed into a lively place of cultural exchange and culinary delights. The Chinese Studies Student Association was invited to a special event: An evening all about the Chinese hot pot. This traditional dish, deeply rooted in China, provided the perfect opportunity for students, lecturers, and other interested parties to get together in a convivial atmosphere.
The evening began at 6:30 pm when the first guests arrived. The atmosphere was warm and inviting right from the start, characterized by eager anticipation and the scent of exotic spices.
As far as the hot pot was concerned, no wishes were left unfulfilled. There were two types of pots - one spicy and one non-spicy - so that everyone could choose according to their taste. Guests, including vegetarians and meat eaters, were invited to select from various ingredients: fresh vegetables, tofu, different types of mushrooms, thinly sliced beef, pork, and chicken. The broths were rich and flavorful, a perfect base for cooking and enjoying the ingredients together.
Lively conversations ensued during the meal, with guests sharing their experiences of Chinese culture and cuisine. For many, it was their first time participating in a hot pot, and the fascination was palpable. Chinese studies students took the opportunity to share their knowledge of China and its rich culture. The event was for culinary enjoyment, education, and intercultural exchange.
Many guests gave positive feedback. The organization of the evening was impeccable. Despite the high number of 48 guests - tickets sold out quickly - the event ran smoothly. The organization team of the Chinese Studies Student Association had thought of everything, from the careful selection of ingredients to the coordination of seating to ensure every guest could participate in the hot pot.
The evening drew to a close at around 9:30 pm. The guests left the room with smiles and the feeling that they had experienced something special. This hot pot evening was more than just a culinary event; it was a journey through the flavors and traditions of China, an evening that strengthened the community and broadened cultural horizons.
Overall, the Chinese hot pot evening at the University of Zurich was a great success. It showed how food can bring people from different backgrounds together and build bridges between different cultures.
